During COVID 19 pandemic phase , nationwide lockdown for 21 days has brought everything to a standstill except for essential services. Everyone is finding it difficult to cope with this sudden pause phase of their life leading to anxiety, worrying thoughts, uncertainty of upcoming days, sleep issues and depression. Alcohol and other drugs of course don't come under essential services. So this unavailability of alcohol drugs is leading to major issues among addicts. According to the National Survey of Substance Abuse Report (2019), there are about 16 crore persons who consume alcohol in the country. The use of alcohol is considerably higher among men (27.3 per cent) as compared to women (1.6 per cent), says the report. Addicts are looking for replacements with illicit substances like Varnish or after shave lotions containing alcohol to handle craving( means intense urge to drink). There are death reports due to the same.They are also indulging in thefts from bar shops. Addiction also lowers immunity affecting lungs, leading to breathing issues called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in smokers making them more susceptible to Covid-19. Addicts also have raised blood pressure , diabetes , liver problems and several other physical conditions as comorbid which leads to susceptibility to Covid There are withdrawal symptoms seen in those who have reduced or stopped usage of substance due to this non availability during this lockdown phase Alcohol withdrawal means changes the body goes through when a person suddenly stops drinking after prolonged and heavy alcohol use. Withdrawal symptoms may include difficulty in sleeping, tremors, increased sweating, palpitations, headache, nausea, vomiting , poor appetite, anxiety, irritability, restlessness and severe craving i.e. an irresistible urge to consume alcohol. In severe cases it leads to delirium means disoriented confusion seizures and increasing risk of death It is important that mental health and de-addiction services are available to these people so that they do not suffer due to lockdown. It is the Best phase for addicts to think the need of drugs for their problems in life, as this lockdown phase is giving them chance for alternative thinking to cope with their anxiety loneliness and other problems in life Those long term and heavy users of alcohol often need rehabilitation and medical care to stop drinking.
